An early morning water main break on South Lewis Lane left a number of complexes without water through Friday afternoon.

Carbondale experienced the water main break on one of its main transmission lines that closed Lewis Lane from Grand Avenue to College Street while Carbondale Water Operations crew worked to get the transmission shut off and repaired, according to a city news release.

University Village has been without water since 10:45 a.m. Friday, employees at the complex said. Water at Aspen Court Apartments was also off as of 2 p.m.

A boil order was issued Friday afternoon for residents east of Wall Street, according to the Carbondale Fire Department.

Carbondale Community High School, District 165, and Carbondale Elementary, District 95, closed at 9:30 a.m. because of the break, local news sources are reporting.

“We’re trying our best to get everything back up and running as soon as possible,” said Elaine Scott, an administrative assistant for the city.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
