SIU volleyball defeats Central Michigan in season opener

Saluki volleyball got off on the right foot to its road back to the NCAA tournament Friday.

SIU defeated Central Michigan 3-0 in straight sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-17) to win their first game in the IUPUI Invitational in Indianapolis.

Senior hitter/setter Meg Viggars led the Salukis to victory with a team high 10 kills, 20 assists and five blocks while redshirt junior outside hitter Andrea Estrada had eight kills and team high 12 digs.

With a team-high 23 assists, senior setter Hannah Kaminsky now has 2,626 assists all-time, just 171 away from the top five in program history.

The win improves SIU’s record in season openers to 25-17 all-time and 3-2 under head coach Justin Ingram.

The Salukis look to improve to 2-0 on the year when they face Duquesne at 10 a.m. Saturday. Duquesne won its only previous matchup with the Salukis 3-0 on Aug. 31, 2013

SIU will then face the host IUPUI Jaguars at 6 p.m. in the final match of the tournament.
