The Recreation Center offers a wide variety of athletic programs for students to get involved in, from a competitive to a relaxed atmosphere, Derek Donlevy said.

While the Recreation Center offers an array of activities, it also contributes to the campus by organizing sport leagues on the intramural level for students to stay active and healthy during their time at the university, said Donlevy, graduate assistant at the center and…

Music festivals swamp summer, create memories

When it comes to those who attend summer music festivals, the attraction lies deeper than the performances.

“The greatest thing about music festivals is everyone’s attitude,” said Maddy Close, a senior from Wheaton studying psychology. “It is non-judgmental and very supportive. It could be your first time, or your fifth time and you will feel just as welcome.”

Music festivals have been around for years, but have recently taken a step…

Summer enrollment shifts local business

Summertime in Carbondale means beer gardens, a lower population and an overall relaxed feel, which Meghan Cole said local residents seem to love.

However, she said the lack of SIUC students in town during the summer does have some consequences.

“There’s definitely going to be a downturn in sales when you have less of a population to deal with,” said Cole, director of Carbondale Main Street.

“Naturally, when you lose an estimated…

University programs to combat campus assaults

In response to recent university shootings across the nation, SIUC’s Department of Public Safety has implemented numerous programs and security measures to reduce campus assaults and ensure the campus community’s safety.

“At the very least, we can learn from unfortunate instances like those,” said Todd Sigler, director of the Department of Public Safety. “The best thing we can do to reduce assaults on campus is to educate the students on…

Cuts at public universities destroy future prosperity

Reduced state funding of public colleges and universities will result in what? We know the inevitable answer: higher tuition for students.

For example, in North Carolina undergraduate tuition increased an average of 23 percent last year in the face of cuts in state funding. Yet North Carolina’s John William Pope Center for Higher Education Policy calls for even more “significant cuts” in higher education funding in that state.

In Ohio the…
