Most students said they understand the importance of filling out their census forms and want to do so — it’s just a matter of actually doing it.
SIUC has been collaborating with the city of Carbondale to convince students and community members to fill out their census forms, since the city will receive money from the government based on the forms to fund services, said Larry Dietz, vice chancellor for Student Affairs.
If the city benefits from the forms, so will the university, he said.
The bulk of the funding would come from people of college age, since the U.S. Census Bureau reported that more than 30 percent of the Carbondale population was age 20 to 24 in 2000.
