The SIU baseball team (6-11) opened up a three-game series with Northern Illinois Friday at Abe Martin Field and walked away with a 19-4 victory.
Southern had six different players account for two or more of the team’s 22 hits, while eight Salukis drove in at least one run on the day.
Both of the teams’ run and hit total are season-highs.
Senior left-hander Ryan Bradley made the start, striking out four while allowing three runs through four-innings, but junior-righty Daniel Etienne was credited with the win after relieving Bradley in the fifth. Etienne (1-0) gave up three hits and a run in four innings of work.
Junior Zach Oates (1-3) started on the bump for NIU and received the loss after giving up 10 runs off as many hits in 4.1 innings Friday.
The Huskies (3-13) scored in four separate innings, but never put a crooked number on the scoreboard. All of Southern’s four scoring innings consisted of three runs or more.
The win snaps a four-game skid the Salukis rode into this weekend series, whereas the loss extends the Huskies’ losing-streak to seven games.
The teams will meet on the diamond again 2 p.m. Saturday for game-two at Abe Martin Field. Weather forecast calls for temperatures in the low-60s and partly cloudy skies with evening showers.
