Senior thrower DeAnna Price set a new record in the hammer throw at the Southern Clash on Friday.

Price broke the American collegiate record with a throw of 72.66 meters. The previous record of 72.27 meters was held by SIU alumna Brittany Riley.

“It’s a distant dream I never thought was going to happen,” Price said in a press release.

Price fell about a foot short of the NCAA record of 72.94 meters, set by Australia native Jenny Dahlgren from the University of Georgia.

“Right when it happened, I burst into tears,” Price said. “It’s something I’ve been trying to go after all season.

The men’s track and field team won the meet 102-77 and the women won 92-72. SIU won 25 of 35 events, including all four relays.

SIU’s next meet is Friday and Saturday at the Billy Hayes Invitational, hosted by Indiana University.
